Catalytic upgrade and combustion of heavy oils

Due to tough competition, stringent regulation and tight refining margins, the global refining industry is hungry for technologies that increase the conversion of crude oil feedstock to higher value products.

Theme 3 is developing two technologies for the efficient utilisation of the feedstock:

  • A reactor, catalyst and process that facilitates the conversion of heavy, high sulphur refinery waste to useful heat
  • Catalysts for heavy oil upgrade with supercritical and subcritical water

 

Key Objectives

  • To improve heavy oils utilisation, reduce waste and improve refinery conversion to high value products
  • Develop catalysts for heavy oil upgrade with supercritical and subcritical water
